The reaction mechanism of this transformation is discussed. The first cycloaddition reactions between <jats:italic>ortho<\/jats:italic>\u2010benzoquinodimethane and either 3\u2010(2\u2010hydroxyphenyl)\u20105\u2010styrylpyrazoles or 5\u2010(2\u2010hydroxyphenyl)\u20101\u2010phenyl\u20103\u2010styrylpyrazoles afforded 5\u2010[2\u2010(3\u2010aryl\u20101,2,3,4\u2010tetrahydronaphthyl)]\u20103\u2010(2\u2010hydroxyphenyl)pyrazoles or 3\u2010[2\u2010(3\u2010aryl\u20101,2,3,4\u2010tetrahydronaphthyl)]\u20101\u2010phenyl\u20105\u2010(2\u2010hydroxyphenyl)pyrazoles, respectively. These cycloadducts were converted into the corresponding naphthylpyrazoles by oxidation with DDQ in dry 1,4\u2010dioxane.
