These in turn were prepared by Suzuki coupling between aryl and thienyl precursors. The electronic interactions between donor and acceptor end groups in the conjugated 1,3\u2010benzothiazoles <jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold> are revealed by the intense and markedly solvatochromic CT transitions. The solvatochromic behaviour of compounds <jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold> was determined by linear regression analyses of absorption maxima in several solvents, where benzothiazole <jats:bold>6f<\/jats:bold> was found to be a very appropriate indicator dye whose absorption wavenumbers (\u0394<jats:styled-content>$\\tilde {\\nu}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/tex2gif-ueqn-1.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\"\/><\/jats:styled-content><jats:sub>max<\/jats:sub> = 1590 cm<jats:sup>\u20131<\/jats:sup>) in aliphatic and dipolar aprotic and in aromatic and chlorinated solvents correlated excellently with the \u03c0* values defined by Kamlet and Taft. Hyper\u2010Rayleigh scattering was used to measure the first hyperpolarizabilities <jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic> of the aforementioned compounds. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to evaluate their thermal stability. The experimental results indicate that good nonlinearity and thermal stability are well balanced for chromophores <jats:bold>6<\/jats:bold>, making them good candidates for device applications.
