Excellent\n                    <jats:italic>ee<\/jats:italic>\n                    values (up to \u2265 98\u2009%) could be obtained with\n                    <jats:bold>1b<\/jats:bold>\n                    , but the conversions were generally inferior to those obtained using (\n                    <jats:italic>R<\/jats:italic>\n                    ,\n                    <jats:italic>R<\/jats:italic>\n                    )\u2010Me\u2010DUPHOS (\n                    <jats:bold>1a<\/jats:bold>\n                    ) under similar conditions. It was also observed that there was a switch in the absolute configuration of the malonate product to (R) on using\n                    <jats:bold>1b<\/jats:bold>\n                    to form the catalyst. This was an indication of the complementary nature of these two ligands. In order to explain this, a rigorous detailed semi\u2010emperical computational study was undertaken. DFT calculations of the Fukui Function (FF) were also conducted to confirm the most likely site (electrophilic) for nucleophilic attack on the active Pd\u2010allyl complex. In the case of the Pd catalyst formed with\n                    <jats:bold>1b<\/jats:bold>\n                    . This result indicated that stereochemical factors were more important than electronic factors in this reaction with\n                    <jats:bold>1b<\/jats:bold>\n                    .
