The key step in the synthesis of these iminosugars, 1,5\u2010dideoxy\u20102\u2010<jats:italic>C<\/jats:italic>\u2010hydroxymethyl\u20101,5\u2010imino\u2010<jats:sc>D<\/jats:sc>\u2010mannitol, 1,5\u2010dideoxy\u20102\u2010<jats:italic>C<\/jats:italic>\u2010hydroxymethyl\u20101,5\u2010imino\u2010<jats:sc>L<\/jats:sc>\u2010gulitol and 1,5\u2010dideoxy\u20102\u2010<jats:italic>C<\/jats:italic>\u2010hydroxymethyl\u20101,5\u2010imino\u2010<jats:sc>D<\/jats:sc>\u2010talitol, was an efficient modified Kiliani reaction performed on the readily available ketose starting materials <jats:sc>L<\/jats:sc>\u2010sorbose and <jats:sc>D<\/jats:sc>\u2010fructose.
