However, similar reactions with aza\u2010heteroaromatic precursors are more challenging and have been much less developed. Herein, we report for the first time catalytic formal cycloadditions of <jats:italic>N,S<\/jats:italic>\u2010heterocycles featuring carboxylic acid substituents, with unsaturated partners (alkynes). The reaction, which works with different symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkynes, produces appealing tricyclic \u0251\u2010pyrones in a straightforward manner. The optimized conditions established for a model reaction employing thieno[2,3\u2010<jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic>]pyridine\u20102\u2010carboxylic acid as substrate, involved the use of Ag<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>CO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\/AgSbF<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub> as additives, and proved to be general for different alkynes. Moreover, analogous cycloadditions using thieno[3,2\u2010<jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic>]pyridine\u20102\u2010carboxylic acid and thieno[2,3\u2010<jats:italic>b<\/jats:italic>]pyrazine\u20106\u2010carboxylic acid were successfully developed.
