The optimal formulation for the membrane comprised of 12\u2005mmol\u2009kg<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> of the ionophore, and 68\u2009% (w\/w) of 2\u2010nitrophenyl phenyl ether as plasticizer and 31\u2009% (w\/w) of high molecular weight PVC. The sensors were soaked in water for a week to allow leakage of anionic impurities and for one day in a perchlorate solution (10<jats:sup>\u22124<\/jats:sup>\u2005mol\u2009L<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>) to improve reproducibility due to its first usage. The stability constant for the ionophore\u2010perchlorate association in the membrane, log <jats:italic>\u03b2<\/jats:italic><jats:sub><jats:italic>IL1<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sub>=3.18\u00b10.04, ensured a performance characterized by the slope of 54.1 (\u00b10.7) mV\u2009dec<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> to perchlorate solutions with concentrations between 1.24\u00d710<jats:sup>\u22127<\/jats:sup> and 1.00\u00d710<jats:sup>\u22123<\/jats:sup>\u2005mol\u2009L<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>. The sensors are insensitive to pH between 3.5 to 11.0, they have a practical detection limit of 7.66 (\u00b10.42) \u00d710<jats:sup>\u22128<\/jats:sup>\u2005mol\u2009L<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> and a response time below 60\u2005s for solutions with perchlorate concentrations above 5\u00d710<jats:sup>\u22126<\/jats:sup>\u2005mol\u2009L<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>.
