{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,28]],"date-time":"2026-03-28T00:46:27Z","timestamp":1774658787554,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":50,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"5","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2014,5,26]],"date-time":"2014-05-26T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1401062400000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"funder":[{"name":"R2DS Ile-de-France program"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Engineering in Life Sciences"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2014,9]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>In order to develop an effective CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> mitigation process using microalgae for potential industrial application, the growth and physiological activity of <jats:italic>Chlorella vulgaris<\/jats:italic> in photobioreactor cultures were studied. <jats:italic>C. vulgaris<\/jats:italic> was grown at two CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> concentrations (2 and 13% of CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> v\/v) and at three incident light intensities (50, 120 and 180 \u03bcmol m<jats:sup>\u22122<\/jats:sup> s<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>) for 9 days. The measured specific growth rate was similar under all conditions tested but an increase in light intensity and CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> concentration affected the biomass and cell concentrations. Although carbon limitation was observed at 2% CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>, similar cellular composition was measured in both conditions. Light limitation induced a net change in the growth behavior of <jats:italic>C. vulgaris<\/jats:italic>. Nitrogen limitation seemed to decrease the nitrogen quota of the cells and rise the intracellular carbon:nitrogen ratio. Exopolysaccharide production per cell appeared to be affected by light intensity. In order to avoid underestimation of the CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> biofixation rate of the microalgae, exopolysaccharide production was taken into account. The maximum CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> removal rate (0.98 g CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> L<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup> d<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>) and the highest biomass concentration (4.14 g DW L<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>) were determined at 13% (v\/v) CO<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub> and 180 \u03bcmol m<jats:sup>\u22122<\/jats:sup> s<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>.
