Seven out of eleven protonation steps were detected (p<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content>$\\rm{{_{i}^{H}}}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/tex2gif-ueqn-1.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\"\/><\/jats:styled-content>=13.66, 12.11, 7.19, 6.15, 5.77, 2.99, and 1.99), and the values found compare well with the ones recently determined by potentiometry for H<jats:sub>7<\/jats:sub>DOA3P, and for other related ligands. The overall basicity of H<jats:sub>7<\/jats:sub>DOA3P is higher than that of H<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>DOTA and <jats:italic>trans\u2010<\/jats:italic>H<jats:sub>6<\/jats:sub>DO2A2P but lower than that of H<jats:sub>8<\/jats:sub>DOTP. Based on multinuclear\u2010NMR spectroscopy, the protonation sequence for H<jats:sub>7<\/jats:sub>DOA3P was also tentatively assigned. Three protonation constants (p<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>MHL<\/jats:sub>, p<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>MH2L<\/jats:sub>, and p<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>MH3L<\/jats:sub>) were determined for the lanthanide complexes, and the values found are relatively high, although lower than the protonation constants of the related ligand (p<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content>$\\rm{{_{3}^{H}}}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/tex2gif-ueqn-2.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\"\/><\/jats:styled-content>, p<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content>$\\rm{{_{4}^{H}}}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/tex2gif-ueqn-3.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\"\/><\/jats:styled-content>, and p<jats:italic>K<\/jats:italic><jats:styled-content>$\\rm{{_{5}^{H}}}$<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/tex2gif-ueqn-4.gif\" xlink:title=\"equation image\"\/><\/jats:styled-content>), indicating that the coordinated phosphonate groups in these complexes are protonated. The acid\u2010assisted dissociation of [Ln(DOA3P)]<jats:sup>4\u2212<\/jats:sup> (Ln=Ce, Eu), in the region <jats:italic>c<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>H+<\/jats:sub>=0.05\u20133.00\u2005mol dm<jats:sup>\u22123<\/jats:sup> and at different temperatures (25\u201360\u00b0), indicated that they have slightly the same kinetic inertness, being the [Eu(H<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>O)<jats:sub>9<\/jats:sub>]<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> aqua ion the final product for europium. The rates of complex formation for [Ln(DOA3P)]<jats:sup>4\u2212<\/jats:sup> (Ln=Ce, Eu) were studied by UV\/VIS spectroscopy in the pH range 5.6\u20136.8.
