Basic Microbiol."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2009,11]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>From stool specimens of 118 healthy children's (1\u201314 years) in Portugal 92 <jats:italic>E. coli<\/jats:italic> and 101 <jats:italic>Enterococcu<\/jats:italic> s spp. strains have been isolated. Almost half (40.2%) of the <jats:italic>E. coli<\/jats:italic> isolates were resistant to ampicillin, 25.0% were resistant to tetracycline and 26.1% were resistant to streptomycin. Resistance genes detected by specific PCR included <jats:italic>bla<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>TEM<\/jats:sub> and\/or <jats:italic>bla<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>SHV<\/jats:sub> and\/or <jats:italic>bla<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>CTX\u2010M<\/jats:sub> (33 of 37 ampicillin and\/or cefotaxime resistant isolates), <jats:italic>tet<\/jats:italic> (A) and\/or <jats:italic>tet<\/jats:italic> (B) (16 of 23 tetracycline\u2010resistant isolates), <jats:italic>aad<\/jats:italic> A (19 of 24 streptomycin\u2010resistant isolates), <jats:italic>cml<\/jats:italic> A (in the two chloramphenicol\u2010resistant isolates), <jats:italic>aac<\/jats:italic> (3)\u2010II with\/without <jats:italic>aac<\/jats:italic> (3)\u2010IV (in the four gentamicin\u2010resistant isolates), <jats:italic>sul<\/jats:italic> 1 and\/or <jats:italic>sul<\/jats:italic> 2 and\/or <jats:italic>sul<\/jats:italic> 3 (in all trimethoprim\/sulfamethoxazole resistant isolates). The majority of the resistant<jats:italic> E. coli<\/jats:italic> isolates (69.1%) belonged to phylogenetic group B2. Of the enterococci isolates <jats:italic>E. faecium<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 53), <jats:italic>E. faecalis<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 41), <jats:italic>E. hirae<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 4) and <jats:italic>E. durans<\/jats:italic> (<jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 3) more than one\u2010fourth (28.7%) of the isolates were resistant to tetracycline; 21.8% were resistant to erythromycin and 8.9% were resistant to kanamycin. Resistance genes detected by PCR in enterococci included <jats:italic>aph<\/jats:italic> (3)\u2032\u2010IIIa (in all kanamycin\u2010resistant isolates), <jats:italic>aac<\/jats:italic> (6\u2032) (in all gentamicin\u2010resistant isolates), <jats:italic>tet<\/jats:italic> (M) and\/or <jats:italic>tet<\/jats:italic> (L) (26 of 29 tetracycline\u2010resistant isolates), <jats:italic>erm<\/jats:italic> (B) (17 of 22 erythromycin\u2010resistant isolates). This survey showed that faecal bacteria such as <jats:italic>E. coli<\/jats:italic> and enterococci of healthy growing children's could be a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes.
