Basic Microbiol."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2010,12]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>Cell\u2010cell signaling alcohol molecules were recently identified in <jats:italic>Candida albicans<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Candida dubliniensis<\/jats:italic> supernatants. To date, it is not known whether these molecules are produced by other <jats:italic>Candida<\/jats:italic> species and their role in biofilm formation is not fully clarified. Herein, <jats:italic>Candida parapsilosis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Candida tropicalis<\/jats:italic> extracellular alcohols production by planktonic cultures was analyzed by headspace\u2010solid\u2010phase microextraction and gas chromatography\u2010mass spectrometry. Both these <jats:italic>Candida<\/jats:italic> species extracellular media contained <jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic> \u2010farnesol, 1\u2010dodecanol, 2\u2010phenylethanol, and isoamyl alcohol but not <jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic> \u2010nerolidol, as produced by <jats:italic>C. albicans<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>C. dubliniensis<\/jats:italic>. Moreover, the ability of these compounds to regulate <jats:italic>C. albicans<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>C. dubliniensis<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>C. parapsilosis<\/jats:italic>, and <jats:italic>C. tropicalis<\/jats:italic> sessile cells was assessed by adding the alcohols after 3 h of adhesion and 48 h of biofilm formation. After 24 h, biofilms were analyzed in terms of cellular mitochondrial activity and total biomass. <jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic>,<jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic> \u2010Farnesol affected <jats:italic>C. albicans<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>C. dubliniensis<\/jats:italic>. <jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic> \u2010Nerolidol and 1\u2010dodecanol elicited <jats:italic>C. parapsilosis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>C. tropicalis<\/jats:italic> changes in further biofilm development. <jats:italic>C. tropicalis<\/jats:italic> was affected by 2\u2010phenylethanol and isoamyl alcohol triggered changes in <jats:italic>C. albicans<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>C. dubliniensis<\/jats:italic>, and <jats:italic>C. tropicalis<\/jats:italic> sessile cells. The results demonstrated that almost all of these alcohols are produced by these <jats:italic>Candida<\/jats:italic> species and also evidence the complexity of biofilm formation.
