The results were compared with those obtained for the essential oil isolated by hydrodistillation (HD). The volatile and the essential oil were analysed by GC and GC\u2010MS. The main compounds are carvacrol (52.2\u201362.0% for HD<jats:italic> vs<\/jats:italic>. 41.7\u201364.5% for SFE), thymol (8.6\u201311.0% for HD<jats:italic> vs<\/jats:italic>. 6.0\u201311.3% for SFE), <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\u2010cymene (6.9\u201312.8% for HD <jats:italic>vs<\/jats:italic>. 6.0\u201317.8% for SFE), \u03b3\u2010terpinene (6.4\u20139.4% for HD <jats:italic>vs<\/jats:italic>. 2.3\u20136.0% for SFE) and \u03b2\u2010bisabolene (2.0\u20132.7% for HD <jats:italic>vs<\/jats:italic>. 2.2\u20133.5% for SFE). The major difference between SFE and HD was the relative amount of thymoquinone, an oxygenated monoterpene with important biological activities, which can be ten\u2010fold higher in volatile oil (1.6\u20133.0 for SFE<jats:italic> vs<\/jats:italic>. 0.2% for HD).
