{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,11,27]],"date-time":"2025-11-27T06:34:48Z","timestamp":1764225288952,"version":"3.41.0"},"reference-count":40,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"3","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2016,1,7]],"date-time":"2016-01-07T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1452124800000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Molecular Nutrition Food Res"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2016,3]]},"abstract":"<jats:sec><jats:title>Scope<\/jats:title><jats:p>The present study aimed to characterize and evaluate flavonoids effects on organic cation uptake in neuronal cells.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods and results<\/jats:title><jats:p>Uptake experiments were conducted using radiolabeled methyl\u20104\u2010phenylpyridinuim ([<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>H]\u2010MPP<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>), in human neuronal dopaminergic cells, SH\u2010SY5Y. Catechin did not alter [<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>H]\u2010MPP<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>uptake, however its metabolite 4\u2019\u2010methyl\u2010catechin decreased it by almost 50%. Epicatechin and its methylated metabolites also decreased [<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>H]\u2010MPP<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>uptake. Interestingly, the quercetin flavonol and its metabolite conjugated with glucuronic acid, as well as the flavanones naringenin and hesperitin, increased [<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>H]\u2010MPP<jats:sup>+<\/jats:sup>uptake.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusion<\/jats:title><jats:p>These results showed that different classes of flavonoids, as well as its metabolites, differently influence neuronal organic cation uptake. Several xeno\u2010 and endobiotics, including neurotransmitters, are organic cations.
