Paramagnetic lanthanide\u2010induced shifts (LIS) and spin\u2010lattice relaxation rate enhancements in the proton resonances of \u03b3\u2010CD on binding of TmDOTP<jats:sup>5\u2212<\/jats:sup> were used to define the position of the guest anion within the host cavity. A proportionality constant which relates pseudo\u2010contact shifts induced by TmDOTP<jats:sup>5\u2212<\/jats:sup> to the geometrical position of each ligand nucleus (previously determined from a LIS study of the TmDOTP<jats:sup>5\u2212<\/jats:sup> complex) was used to determine a fully bound LIS value for each \u03b3\u2010CD proton. These values, in combination with experimental LIS data from TmDOTP<jats:sup>5\u2212<\/jats:sup> titrations at constant \u03b3\u2010CD concentration, were then used to obtain the association constant for the host\u2010guest complex (3.9\u20134.5 mol l<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>).
