Many factors can contribute to increase the chances that a biomarker study becomes successful. In a cerebrospinal fluid analysis (<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">CSF<\/jats:styled-content>), more than 84% of laboratory errors can be attributed to several preanalytical variables that include <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">CSF<\/jats:styled-content> collection, storage, and freeze thawing cycles. In this concept paper, we focus on some critical issues arising from basic proteomics investigation in order to highlight some key elements of <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">CSF<\/jats:styled-content> quality control. Furthermore, we propose a direct assessment of sample quality (<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DASQ<\/jats:styled-content>) by applying a fast <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">MALDI<\/jats:styled-content>\u2010<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">TOF<\/jats:styled-content>\u2010<jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">MS<\/jats:styled-content> methodology to evaluate molecular features of sample degradation and oxidation. We propose <jats:styled-content style=\"fixed-case\">DASQ<\/jats:styled-content> as a fast and simple initial step to be included in large\u2010scale projects for neurological biomarker studies.
