The Eu<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> emission spectrum depends critically on the crystal structure of the GaN host; implantation and post\u2010annealing at 800 \u00b0C partially converts implantation\u2010damaged ZB\u2010GaN:Eu to W\u2010GaN:Eu. Selective excitation of PL at wavelengths below the ZB\u2010GaN band edge reveals a new sharp emission line at 627 nm, together with a number of satellites, which we ascribe to ZB\u2010GaN:Eu.
