PAC measurements as a function of annealing temperature were performed after implantation of <jats:sup>111<jats:italic>m<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup>Cd\/<jats:sup>111<\/jats:sup>Cd (<jats:italic>T<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>1\/2<\/jats:sub>\u2009=\u200948\u2009min) and later compared to density functional theory simulations. For ZnO, the substitution of Cd probes at Zn sites was observed, as well as the formation of a probe\u2010defect complex. The ternary Cd<jats:sub><jats:italic>x<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sub>Zn<jats:sub>1\u2212<jats:italic>x<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sub>O (<jats:italic>x<\/jats:italic>\u2009=\u20090.16) showed good macroscopic crystal quality but revealed some clustering of local defects around the probe Cd atoms, which could not be annealed.
