An evolution from a monoclinic (M) Gd<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>Si<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>Ge<jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\u2010type to a tetragonal (T) Zr<jats:sub>5<\/jats:sub>Si<jats:sub>4<\/jats:sub>\u2010type structure, with the addition of La, is observed, finding that the T phase is stable for <jats:italic>x<\/jats:italic>\u2009\u2265\u20092. A monotonic expansion of the unit cell volume with a rate of 28 \u00c5<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>\/La by increasing the content of the non\u2010magnetic La ions in the system influences significantly the overall magnetic behavior. For instance, <jats:italic>T<jats:sub>C<\/jats:sub><\/jats:italic> decreases in a rate of d<jats:italic>T<jats:sub>C<\/jats:sub><\/jats:italic>\/d<jats:italic>x<\/jats:italic>\u2009=\u2009\u221247.8\u2009K\u2009La<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>; and a considerable hysteresis reduction is observed as a result of the change on the nature of the phase transition from a first to a second\u2010order one.
