Status Solidi (c)"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2007,3]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>We have studied the effects of hole doping on the crystal and electronic structure of the La<jats:sub>1\u2013x<\/jats:sub>Sr<jats:sub>x<\/jats:sub>CoO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> (x = 0.0 \u00f7 0.5) by neutron Rietveld analysis and its correlation with the X\u2010ray\u2010absorption spectroscopy data. The abrupt decrease of the Co\u2013O distance and an increase of the Co\u2013O\u2013Co angle upon substitution of La<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> by Sr<jats:sup>2+ <\/jats:sup>in La<jats:sub>1\u2013x<\/jats:sub>Sr<jats:sub>x<\/jats:sub>CoO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> are attributed to a change in the band structure at the transition from semiconducting to metallic state. Upon strontium doping, a variation of Co <jats:italic>L<\/jats:italic><jats:sub>2,3<\/jats:sub>\u2010edges in La<jats:sub>1\u2013x<\/jats:sub>Sr<jats:sub>x<\/jats:sub>CoO<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> series suggests an increase of the mixed low Co<jats:sup>4+ <\/jats:sup>and high or intermediate Co<jats:sup>3+<\/jats:sup> spin states.
