Best sample morphology (rod\u2010shaped) is found corresponding to the pH value of pH\u20109.1 of the precursor solution. Due to the low phonon frequency of Gd\n                    <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n                    O\n                    <jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\n                    host, intense green upconversion emission around 539, 550\u2005nm wavelength is observed from the sample on 980\u2005nm diode laser excitation. In down conversion emission mode, bands around 539, 550\u2005nm and 653\u2005nm are found on 449\u2005nm arc lamp excitation. The prepared samples were further studied for cathodoluminescence and the effect of magnetic field on the upconversion emission.
