We suggest that accelerators can be analysed as platforms whose function is to relate start-ups and investors within entrepreneurial ecosystems. According to our analysis, leading accelerators play a mediating role in enabling entrepreneurs to attract investors with a higher profile than they would have otherwise. Using propensity score matching, we compare participants to several accelerator programs in North America with similar non-participating start-ups. We measure the prominence of their investors using their centrality in the investor-network. For several top-tier accelerators, we observe that start-ups who participated in their programs attracted higher profile investors than other similar start-ups that were not accelerated. Furthermore, among accelerators, pioneer Y-Combinator appears to benefit from a winner-takes-all effect, which is typical of platform competition: Not only do investors it connects its participant startups to appear to be of a higher profile, but it is also the only accelerator in our sample whose participants gain access to an amount of early-stage funding that is significantly higher than those raised by the control group.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1007\/s10479-023-05583-0","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,9,15]],"date-time":"2023-09-15T03:21:05Z","timestamp":1694748065000},"page":"1925-1952","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":11,"title":["Accelerator-mediated access to investors among early-stage start-ups"],"prefix":"10.1007","volume":"348","author":[{"given":"Jean-Michel","family":"Dalle","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4361-4278","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Matthijs","family":"den Besten","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jeremie","family":"Morfin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,9,15]]},"reference":[{"issue":"417","key":"5583_CR1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"318","DOI":"10.2307\/2234770","volume":"103","author":"D Acemoglu","year":"1993","unstructured":"Acemoglu, D.
