However, the <jats:inline-formula><jats:alternatives><jats:tex-math>$$\\ell ^1$$<\/jats:tex-math><mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\">\n                  <mml:msup>\n                    <mml:mi>\u2113<\/mml:mi>\n                    <mml:mn>1<\/mml:mn>\n                  <\/mml:msup>\n                <\/mml:math><\/jats:alternatives><\/jats:inline-formula>-semi-norm is not universal in the sense that it does not vanish on as few classes as possible. We show that universal finite functorial semi-norms do exist on singular homology on the category of topological spaces that are homotopy equivalent to finite CW-complexes.
