In this editorial, we argue why recent trends in research and practice call for a better understanding of <jats:italic>responsible standardisation<\/jats:italic> after which we review current conceptualisations of the concept. We proceed by introducing the diverse contributions of this topical collection that advance our current understanding of what it means to develop standards responsibly.
