Prominent discussions of this problem have proposed a producer-oriented solution; it is argued that representations must be produced by systems employing perceptual constancy mechanisms. However, representations may be produced by simple transducers if they are consumed in the right way. It is characteristic of representations to be consumed by systems which are capable of independent action. This paper defends this claim; discusses more precise, naturalistic formulations; and shows how it can illuminate the explanatory payoffs which science achieves by appealing to representation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1007\/s11229-018-01941-9","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,9,20]],"date-time":"2018-09-20T15:36:09Z","timestamp":1537457769000},"page":"4533-4550","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Representation and the active consumer"],"prefix":"10.1007","volume":"197","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5837-5057","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Patrick","family":"Butlin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,9,20]]},"reference":[{"issue":"3","key":"1941_CR1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"407","DOI":"10.1111\/1746-8361.12152","volume":"70","author":"M Artiga","year":"2016","unstructured":"Artiga, M.
