First, I consider the ABC island bear, which can be correctly classified into more than one species. I argue that this classificatory pluralism can be explained by reference to the range of alternative explanatory interests in biology. In the second half of the paper, I pursue an interest-relative view of classification more generally. I then apply the resultant view to a second case study: whether whales are fish. I argue that this question is not one about scientific vs folk usage, as has been assumed. I also develop a new view: that Fish<\/jats:italic> should be rejected as a category, both from the point of view of biological science, and from the point of view of folk taxonomy. Along the way, I use the interest-relative view to shed light on the circumstances under which higher taxa should be accepted as legitimate categories for biological science.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1007\/s11229-019-02284-9","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,6,8]],"date-time":"2019-06-08T06:02:45Z","timestamp":1559973765000},"page":"3369-3387","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Whales, fish and Alaskan bears: interest-relative taxonomy and kind pluralism in biology"],"prefix":"10.1007","volume":"198","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7504-0283","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Henry","family":"Taylor","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2019,6,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"2284_CR1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"67","DOI":"10.1023\/A:1004511407133","volume":"95","author":"R Boyd","year":"1999","unstructured":"Boyd, R.
