Lebendige Demokratien brauchen gut informierte B\u00fcrger, die relevante gesellschaftliche Fragen verstehen, diskutieren und sich in \u00f6ffentliche Entscheidungsprozesse einbringen k\u00f6nnen. Dieser Aufsatz stellt in Erweiterung von Statistical Literacy eine Teildisziplin vor, die wir Zivilstatistik nennen. Zivilstatistik konzentriert sich auf das Verstehen statistischer Informationen \u00fcber die Gesellschaft, wie sie von den Medien, Statistik\u00e4mtern und anderen Statistikanbietern bereitgestellt werden. Die Herausforderung, Menschen zu bef\u00e4higen, Sinn aus diesen Daten zu erschlie\u00dfen, richtet sich gleicherma\u00dfen an Bildungseinrichtungen (Schulen und Hochschulen) wie auch an Medien und Statistikanbieter. Im vorliegenden Aufsatz beschreiben wir die spezifischen Charakteristika von Zivilstatistik und begr\u00fcnden die Notwendigkeit dieser Teildisziplin, die im Schnittfeld von Statistik, Gesellschaftswissenschaften und \u2013 wegen ihres Bildungsauftrages \u2013 Erziehungswissenschaften liegt. Wir beschreiben ein Rahmenkonzept f\u00fcr Kompetenzen im Bereich Zivilstatistik und weisen auf reichhaltiges, frei verf\u00fcgbares Lehr- und Lernmaterial hin, das im Rahmen einer europ\u00e4ischen Zusammenarbeit von sechs Hochschulen im Projekt ProCivicStat erarbeitet wurde.
