While AI offers significant benefits, it raises concerns about the patient-provider relationship and key care values. To mitigate these risks and align technology with societal values, experts stress the importance of user involvement in technology development. However, input from patients or nurses during AI development remains uncommon. The rapidly digitizing healthcare thus demonstrates a context where technological citizenship is not yet thriving, underscoring the need for improvement in this area. This article examines a case study where nurses contributed to the development of an AI-driven monitoring camera for the cardiothoracic surgery department. Based on interview data, our study shows that involving users, particularly nurses, can lead to the improved innovation of a socio-technical care practice, greater recognition of the importance of user involvement among technology developers, and increased empowerment of nurses with regards to the technology that impacts their work practice. To promote technological citizenship in the evolving healthcare landscape, this article offers recommendations for fostering greater user involvement during the development and implementation of new technologies.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1007\/s11948-025-00565-w","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,11,20]],"date-time":"2025-11-20T11:39:43Z","timestamp":1763638783000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Promoting User Involvement to Foster Technological Citizenship in the Digitizing Healthcare Domain"],"prefix":"10.1007","volume":"31","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0002-8413-9167","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Anne Marte","family":"Gardenier","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0006-9781-8475","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Iris","family":"Cramer","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Rinie","family":"van Est","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,11,20]]},"reference":[{"issue":"1","key":"565_CR1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"1163","DOI":"10.1186\/s12913-023-10098-2","volume":"23","author":"S Adus","year":"2023","unstructured":"Adus, S., Macklin, J., & Pinto, A.
