The RTS consists of a series of workshops involving group discussions, interactions with various social robots (Paro, Nao, Furhat, Pepper, and QT), and activities designed to improve understanding and familiarity with social robots. The study aims to assess RTS’s feasibility for enhancing robot literacy by focusing on social robots. The study also aims to explore the participants’ perceptions and experiences of the RTS. With 11 senior participants and two care workers in a Finnish care home, the qualitative data were collected through a questionnaire, recorded group discussions and interviews, and observation notes. Findings indicate a strong willingness among the participating older adults to learn about robots. The notable highlights include emotional interactions with Paro robot and keen interest in the local delivery robot. The study concludes that a collaborative, hands-on, and discussion-based learning model effectively enhances robot literacy, allowing older adults to critically reflect on the role and capabilities of robots in society. Future research will focus on expanding the RTS and validating the RTS with a larger number of participants.
[[2025,6,24
["Robotour for Seniors – A Co-Learning Model to Enhance Robot Literacy among Older Adults in the Care Home Context
[[2025,6,24
Ahtinen A, Chowdhury A, Beheshtian N, Millan VR, Wu C-H (2023) Collaborative learning with social Robots – Reflections on the novel Co-learning concepts robocamp and Robotour. in Learning and collaboration technologies. The study was performed in accordance with the ethical standards as per the ethical principles of research with human participants defined by the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity. The ethical aspects were carefully considered in the research plan and conduction, and all participants, who were competent adults, signed an informed consent. A predefined data security and privacy policy was strictly followed based on the privacy notice form that was formulated for the research and was available to the participants. All involved robots were screened to be data safe, i.e., personal data was not delivered to third parties through them. Research data was collected, saved, stored, and analyzed based on the data protection plan, including data safe drives to store data, pseudonymization of data, and safe protocols to share data between the included researchers.
This article has not been previously submitted on any other forum.
