People with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) need to self-administer insulin to maintain blood glucose (BG) levels in a normal range, which is usually a very challenging task. Developing a reliable glucose forecasting model would have a profound impact on diabetes management, since it could provide predictive glucose alarms or insulin suspension at low-glucose for hypoglycemia minimisation. Recently, deep learning has shown great potential in healthcare and medical research for diagnosis, forecasting and decision-making. In this work, we introduce a deep learning model based on a dilated recurrent neural network (DRNN) to provide 30-min forecasts of future glucose levels. Using dilation, the DRNN model gains a much larger receptive field in terms of neurons aiming at capturing long-term dependencies. A transfer learning technique is also applied to make use of the data from multiple subjects. The proposed approach outperforms existing glucose forecasting algorithms, including autoregressive models (ARX), support vector regression (SVR) and conventional neural networks for predicting glucose (NNPG) (e.g. RMSE = NNPG, 22.9 mg\/dL; SVR, 21.7 mg\/dL; ARX, 20.1 mg\/dl; DRNN, 18.9 mg\/dL on the OhioT1DM dataset). The results suggest that dilated connections can improve glucose forecasting performance efficiently.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1007\/s41666-020-00068-2","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,4,12]],"date-time":"2020-04-12T18:02:12Z","timestamp":1586714532000},"page":"308-324","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":112,"title":["Dilated Recurrent Neural Networks for Glucose Forecasting in Type 1 Diabetes"],"prefix":"10.1007","volume":"4","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9782-3470","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Taiyu","family":"Zhu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Kezhi","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Jianwei","family":"Chen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Pau","family":"Herrero","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Pantelis","family":"Georgiou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,4,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"68_CR1","unstructured":"World Health Organization and others (2016) Global report on diabetes World Health Organization"},{"key":"68_CR2","first-page":"16","volume":"11","author":"J Nerup","year":"1988","unstructured":"Nerup J, Mandrup-Poulsen T, M\u00f8lvig J, Helqvist S, Wogensen L, Egeberg J (1988) Mechanisms of pancreatic beta-cell destruction in type i diabetes.
