Despite its importance, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews examining FAI from an ethical perspective, as well as limited discussion on its potential applications and future directions. This paper addresses these gaps by providing a thorough review of FAI, focusing on theoretical perspectives both for and against its development, and presenting a formal definition in a clear and accessible format. Key technical subfields are discussed from the perspectives of eXplainable AI (XAI), privacy, fairness and Affective Computing (AC). Additionally, the paper identifies challenges in current technological advancements and explores future research avenues. The findings emphasise the significance of developing FAI and advocate for its continued advancement to ensure ethical and beneficial AI development.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1007\/s43681-026-01070-x","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,8]],"date-time":"2026-03-08T18:33:12Z","timestamp":1772994792000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Towards friendly AI: a comprehensive review and new perspectives on human-AI alignment"],"prefix":"10.1007","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"Qiyang","family":"Sun","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yupei","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Emran","family":"Alturki","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Sunil Munthumoduku Krishna","family":"Murthy","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Bjoern W.","family":"Schuller","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"1070_CR1","volume-title":"Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind","author":"YN Harari","year":"2014","unstructured":"Harari, Y.N.: Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.
