Previous studies have identified that income, education level, race/ethnicity, insurance status, and rural residence are correlated with MMR. However, the influence of social factors such as marriage on MMR has been rarely studied in the U.S. This study fills that gap by examining the relationship between maternal mortality rates and marriage-related factors at the state level, while controlling for socioeconomic, demographic, and precondition variables. We find a cluster of higher maternal mortality rates in the Southern U.S. Statistical analysis suggests that the female median age at first marriage is negatively correlated with MMR (β = -0.698) at a significance level of 0.001, and the percentage of married mothers is also negatively correlated with MMR (β = -0.513) at a significance level of 0.05. In contrast, the marriage rate and percentage of uninsured individuals do not appear to influence MMR at the state level. Furthermore, abortion policy is correlated with MMR (β = 0.427), with stricter abortion bans associated with higher MMR. Maternal mortality in the U.S. remains a complex issue shaped by both social and economic factors. This study suggests that young, unmarried mothers and women who marry early may benefit from more proactive education before pregnancy and specialized care afterward. Future public health policies should prioritize these factors.
[[2025,7,3
["Maternal mortality rates: Does marriage matter?
[[2025,7,3
Addante, A.
