The method is based on their competitive complexation reaction with a color indicator to form \u03b2\u2010cyclodextrin\u2010inclusion complexes. Several pH color indicators were tested, but phenolphthalein (PHP) showed the best interaction with the \u03b2\u2010cyclodextrin (\u03b2\u2010CD) with an inclusion yield higher than 95%. The best concentrations of \u03b2\u2010cyclodextrin to form inclusion complexes were 1.24 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22123<\/jats:sup> and 6.2 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22124<\/jats:sup> M at pH 9.5 and 10.5. Statistical analysis of the results showed that the pH had a significant effect on the DCA determination and that high \u03b2\u2010CD\u2010PHP inclusion complex concentrations had a significant negative effect on the UDCA determination (<jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic> &lt; 0.05). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 3.94 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22125<\/jats:sup> and 1.31 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22124<\/jats:sup> M for DCA (range: 6.1 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22126<\/jats:sup>\u20133.13 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22123<\/jats:sup> M), 4.08 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22125<\/jats:sup> and 1.36 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22124<\/jats:sup> M for UDCA (range: 6.05 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22126<\/jats:sup>\u20133.88 \u00d7 10<jats:sup>\u22124<\/jats:sup> M).
