The common secondary structure calculated for \u03b1\u2010 and \u03b2\u2010interferons is used to predict the three\u2010dimensional structures of fragments 1\u2013110 and 111\u2013166 of the chains (which are supposed to be quasi\u2010independent domains). The predicted structure of the active domain I (1\u2013110) is an \u2018up\u2010and\u2010down\u2019 tetrahelical complex (in which the second helix is shorter than the others and can be absent in \u03b1<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\u2010interferon) similar to the mirror image of myohaemoerythrin.
