Prolonged treatment of the cells with phorbol\u201012,13\u2010dibutyrate (PDBu) caused the partial down\u2010regulation of protein kinase C to a level of 25\u201335% of that in control cells. In these PDBu\u2010pretreated cells, TPA neither induced DNA synthesis nor inhibited the WBS\u2010induced DNA synthesis, but still inhibited the WBS\u2010induced increase in [Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>]<jats:sub>i<\/jats:sub>.
