Removal of proteasomes from the extracts by immunoprecipitation caused almost complete inhibition of ATP\u2010dependent degradation of [<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>H]methylcasein, without affecting ATP\u2010independent proteolysis. Peptide fragments of [<jats:sup>3<\/jats:sup>H]casein, obtained by cyanogen bromide cleavage, were rapidly degraded in an ATP\u2010independent fashion and this activity was not affected by removal of the proteasomes.
