{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,5,15]],"date-time":"2026-05-15T22:39:35Z","timestamp":1778884775503,"version":"3.51.4"},"reference-count":27,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"3","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2002,1,16]],"date-time":"2002-01-16T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1011139200000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":3551,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["FEBS Letters"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1992,4,27]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>In several types of cells whose cytoplasmic Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> is regulated by inositol phosphate derivatives, low concentrations of InsP<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> added to permeabilized cell suspensions induce the rapid discharge or part of the InsP<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010sensitive Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> pool instead of slow monophasic release of Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> from the entire pool. As a tentative explanation for this puzzling observation, sometimes called \u2018quantal release\u2019, it was suggested that the reduced intraluminal Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> concentration remaining in the Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> pool after a certain amount of Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> had been released might allosterically reduce the channels' affinity for InsP<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub> and the corresponding InsP<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010dependent Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> efflux, and thus result in partial pool discharge (Irvine, R.F. (1990) FEBS Lett. 263, 5\u20139). We have tested this hypothesis by manipulating the Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> pool contents with ionophore, and found that the rate of InsP<jats:sub>3<\/jats:sub>\u2010dependent Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> efflux after ionophore\u2010induced partial discharge of the Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup> pools was much faster than what was predicted on the basis of this hypothesis.
