The BMP\u2010induced late phase c\u2010<jats:italic>fos<\/jats:italic> gene expression was temporally associated with the onset of marked expression of the genes for osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase, differentiation markers of mature osteoblasts. In contrast, none of TGF\u2010\u03b21, 10% FBS, IGF\u2010I and IGF\u2010II, which induced only the immediate\u2010early c\u2010<jats:italic>fos<\/jats:italic> mRNA expression, stimulated the expression of osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase genes. These data suggest that in osteoblasts BMP\u20102 and BMP\u20103 induce the late phase expression of c\u2010<jats:italic>fos<\/jats:italic>, which may play a role in transcriptional activation of the genes involved in differentiation of
