Studies of the intraorganellar site of \u03b1\u2010oxidation of [1\u2010<jats:sup>14<\/jats:sup>C]phytanic acid to pristanic acid in peroxisomes isolated from human liver demonstrate that phytanoyl\u2010CoA ligase is present in the peroxisomal membrane and that the enzyme system for \u03b1\u2010oxidation of phytanic acid to pristanic acid is in the peroxisomal matrix. In contrast to the \u03b2\u2010oxidation system for fatty acids, the substrate for \u03b1\u2010oxidation is free phytanic acid.
