Inactivation by either kinase resulted from the phosphorylation of Ser\u201021 and was reversed by treatment with protein phosphatase 2A<jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>. Phosphorylation also decreased GSK3\u03b1 activity towards glycogen synthase, inhibitor\u20102 and c\u2010jun. The specificity of GSK3a was similar to GSK3\u03b2, but with the synthetic peptide substrate heparin stimulated the dephosphorylated form of GSK3\u03b1 (6\u2010fold) more than GSK3\u03b2(1.8\u2010fold).
