Its effect on the production of IL\u20106 by normal keratinocytes and keratinocyte cell lines of human origin was studied and compared to that of IL\u20104. IL\u201013, similarly to IL\u20104, stimulated IL\u20106 expression by these cells in a dose\u2010 and time\u2010dependent manner. Contamination with endotoxin was excluded by the use of polymyxin B and heat\u2010inactivated cytokines. Further, we showed that IL\u201013, like IL\u20104, not only stimulated IL\u20106 production but also was able to induce overexpression of this cytokine in response to an inflammatory signal such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS). In a previous study, we demonstrated that IL\u201013, by inhibiting IL\u20106 and other cytokines produced by monocytes, exhibited an \u2018anti\u2010inflammatory profile\u2019 comparable to that displayed by IL\u20104. In contrast, we show here that IL\u201013, by stimulating IL\u20106 production by keratinocytes, may favour the installation of an inflammatory process at a local level and, here again, it acted like IL\u20104.
