These \u03b2 subnunits contain variable N\u2010termini, which can modulate the inactivation of <jats:italic>Shaker<\/jats:italic> \u03b1 subunits, but are homologous throughout an aldo\u2010keto reductase core. Human and ferret \u03b23 proteins are identical with rat \u03b21 throughout the core while \u03b22 proteins are not; \u03b22 also contains a shorter N\u2010terminus and has no reported physiological role.
