Circumstantial evidence pointed to <jats:italic>Escherichia coli<\/jats:italic> isochorismate hydroxymutase isogenes being responsible for this conversion. While the gene involved in enterobactin synthesis (<jats:italic>entC<\/jats:italic>) was known, the corresponding gene for menaquinone biosynthesis (<jats:italic>menF<\/jats:italic>) was not but has now been identified and sequenced.
