Analysis of the completed genome sequences of <jats:italic>Caenorhabditis elegans<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Drosophila melanogaster<\/jats:italic> indicates that this gene family typically comprises 3\u20134 members in metazoans. Phylogenetic analysis reveals three main branches represented, respectively, by <jats:italic>Saccharomyces cerevisiae YME1<\/jats:italic>, human <jats:italic>SPG7<\/jats:italic> (paraplegin) and <jats:italic>S. cerevisiae AFG3<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>RCA1<\/jats:italic>. mt\u2010AAA metalloproteases are weak candidates for several previously studied <jats:italic>Drosophila<\/jats:italic> mutants.
