In polarized MDCK cells caveolin\u20101 and \u20102 are found together on basolateral caveolae whereas the apical membrane, where only caveolin\u20101 is present, lacks caveolae. Expression of a caveolin mutant prevented the formation of the large caveolin\u20101\/\u20102 hetero\u2010oligomeric complexes, and led to intracellular retention of caveolin\u20102 and disappearance of caveolae from the basolateral membrane. Correspondingly, in MDCK cells over\u2010expressing caveolin\u20102 the basolateral membrane exhibited an increased number of caveolae.
