This is the first <jats:italic>SOD<\/jats:italic> from a hyperthermophilic bacterium that has been cloned. It is an iron\u2010containing homo\u2010oligomeric protein with a monomeric molecular mass of 24.2 kDa. The DNA\u2010derived amino acid sequence is more similar to those of known Mn\u2010 and Fe\u2010SODs from thermophilic archaea than of Cu, Zn\u2010SODs. The metal binding residues found in all SOD sequences from different species are also conserved in <jats:italic>A. pyrophilus<\/jats:italic> SOD.
