The <jats:italic>IFN\u2010\u03b2<\/jats:italic> promoter is controlled primarily by the virus\u2010inducible enhancer elements, the IRF\u2010Es. Here we show that IRF\u20103, an IRF family transcription factor, translocates to the nucleus from the cytoplasm upon virus infection in NIH\/3T3 cells. The nuclear IRF\u20103 is phosphorylated, interacts with the co\u2010activators CBP\/p300, and binds specifically to the <jats:italic>IFN\u2010\u03b2<\/jats:italic> IRF\u2010E. Furthermore, overexpression of IRF\u20103 causes a marked increase in virus\u2010induced <jats:italic>IFN\u2010\u03b2<\/jats:italic> mRNA expression.
