{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,8,7]],"date-time":"2025-08-07T08:51:06Z","timestamp":1754556666884},"reference-count":20,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"1","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[1999,8,30]],"date-time":"1999-08-30T00:00:00Z","timestamp":935971200000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":10,"URL":"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/termsAndConditions#vor"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["FEBS Letters"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1999,8,20]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>It was found that rabbit skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) contained two main gangliosides: NeuNAc\u03b1 2\u21923 Gal\u03b2 1\u21924 Glc\u03b2 1\u21921\u2032ceramide (GM3) and Gal\u03b2 1\u21923 GalNAc\u03b2 1\u21924(NeuNAc\u03b1 2\u21923) Gal\u03b2 1\u21924 Glc\u03b2 1\u21921\u2032ceramide (GM1), and that the most abundant ganglioside GM3 could positively modulate the SR Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>\u2010ATPase activity. In this paper, the effect of GM1 on Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>\u2010ATPase was further investigated and compared with that of GM3. The study demonstrates that GM1 has an opposite effect with respect to GM3 on the activity of SR Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>\u2010ATPase. Using assays, including intrinsic and time\u2010resolved fluorescence and fluorescence quenching, the conformational changes of SR Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>\u2010ATPase induced by GM1 and GM3 were compared. Obtained results indicate that GM1 could make the Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>\u2010ATPase molecules less compact in the hydrophilic domain but more compact in the hydrophobic domain, while GM3 makes the enzyme more compact in both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic domain.
