Blood samples were studied for calcium uptake, intracellular calcium level and calcium\u2010dependent adenosine triphosphatase activity of red blood cell ghost. Urinary calcium excretion was estimated from the 24\u2010h urine samples. These values were compared in the two groups. <jats:italic>Results:<\/jats:italic> The mean gestational age at recruitment was similar in both the groups. The mean maternal age was 24.28\u00b12.41 years in pre\u2010eclamptic and 23.48\u00b14.16 years in normotensive women. In pre\u2010eclampsia 24\u2010h urinary calcium excretion (71.20\u00b122.95 mg\/day) and calcium\u2010dependent ATPase activity (10.78\u00b12.40 nmol\/P<jats:sub>i<\/jats:sub>\/mg protein\/min) was significantly lower compared to normotensive primigravidae (calcium excretion=189.24\u00b157.06 mg\/day; Ca<jats:sup>2+<\/jats:sup>\u2010dependent ATPase=12.64\u00b12.42 nmolPi\/mg \/protein per min; <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>&lt;0.001). Intracellular calcium levels and calcium uptake at 10 min by red blood cells were significantly higher in pre\u2010eclampsia (<jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>&lt;0.05).
