A Cognitive Theory of Consciousness. Cambridge University Press, New York. The immense role Bernard Baars’ work has played and does play in consciousness theory is, so far as we can tell, not completely to the subject of this discussion. What he calls consciousness has to do with the self that emerges in self conscious creatures. Our paper is confined by design to primitive, selfless consciousness at the level prior to that of the self model began to appear in the minds of some creatures. Creatures who identify themselves as selves are no longer primarily concerned for the good of the model body (as are the entities with the primitive consciousness we describe here) but primarily for the long term good of that ‘self’. From Piaget onward, experimentalists have sought to determine when the ‘self’ concept arises in baby humans. Many believe that it arises at around 18 months, while full consciousness arises much earlier – at about 6 months. Baar seems to be concerned primarily with how the brain/body/world in a self-conscious human produces its conscious sense of self consciousness. We have aimed our work at a lower, earlier stage of evolution and biological development.
Proc.
