ABPM was performed (SpaceLabs 90207) before and after 6\u20139 months of use of OC. We also evaluated ABPM in eight women (two smokers) before and after 6\u20138 months on an intrauterine device (IUD) as contraceptive method \u2014 these were used as control subjects. <jats:italic>Results:<\/jats:italic> OC produced a significant increase in 24\u2010h ABPM values (from 120\u00b13\/75\u00b12 to 128\u00b14\/81\u00b12 mmHg, <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>&lt;0.04) which was particularly evident for night\u2010time values (from 108\u00b12\/64\u00b12 to 120\u00b14\/73\u00b12 mmHg, <jats:italic>P<\/jats:italic>&lt;0.02). After OC, two normotensive women developed \u2018hypertensive values\u2019. In OC users there was a slight but significant increase in body weight which did not correlate with the increase of blood pressure. In contrast, in the control group (IUD) neither ABPM values nor weight were modified by the contraceptive maneuver. <jats:italic>Conclusions:<\/jats:italic> In normotensive women, low\u2010dose OC may increase blood pressure to an extent that, at least in some women, may affect blood pressure control towards \u2018hypertensive values\u2019.
