The narrow connection between juvenile\/academic events and alcohol consumption makes youngsters vulnerable to this consumption.<\/jats:p><jats:p>A descriptive-correlational and transversal study was conducted with a 552 students\u2019 sample of the Nursing degree aiming to determine some psychological characteristics that might influence\/predict alcohol use\/abuse in youngsters: alexithymia, self-concept and health control locus. The data collection instrument comprehended: Graffar Social Classification; Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS20), What Do I Think Of Health, Self-Concept Clinical Inventory (SCCI) and Alcohol Involvement Scale (AIS).<\/jats:p><jats:p>Male gender is related to alcohol involvement (rho = \u22120.276; p = .000), revealing that 35% of the male gender and 7% of the female are normally drinkers with problems.<\/jats:p><jats:p>Externally oriented thought (F3-TAS20) (rho = .084; p = .048), the impulsiveness (F4-SCCI) (rho = .119; p = .005) and the external control locus (rho = .118; p = .005) are correlated to the involvement with alcohol.<\/jats:p><jats:p>Hierarchic multiple regression revealed as behaviour predictor variables of that involvement: gender (3.8%; p = .000), impulsiveness (1.4%; p = .005) and self-efficiency with inverse relation (F2-SCCI) (1.0%; p = .015).<\/jats:p><jats:p>It is concluded that the choice of preventive strategies must be focused in actions that facilitate personal and social development, that promote personal and social skills, culminating in a freedom of choice by healthy behaviours and life-styles, diminishing the risk of PLA.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1016\/s0924-9338(11)71786-2","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2011,5,7]],"date-time":"2011-05-07T22:31:09Z","timestamp":1304807469000},"page":"75-75","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Influence of alexithymia, self-concept and health locus of control on alcohol consumption of young Portuguese"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"26","author":[{"given":"R.","family":"Lopes","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,4,16]]},"container-title":["European Psychiatry"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/api.elsevier.com\/content\/article\/PII:S0924933811717862?httpAccept=text\/xml","content-type":"text\/xml","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/api.elsevier.com\/content\/article\/PII:S0924933811717862?httpAccept=text\/plain","content-type":"text\/plain","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/S092493380008857X","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2020,4,17]],"date-time":"2020-04-17T09:26:46Z","timestamp":1587115606000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/product\/identifier\/S092493380008857X\/type\/journal_article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2011,3]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"S2","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2011,3]]}},"alternative-id":["S092493380008857X"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/s0924-9338(11)71786-2","relation":{},"ISSN":["0924-9338","1778-3585"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0924-9338","type":"print"},{"value":"1778-3585","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2011,3]]}}}
